winter solstice

It is upon us, the day in the northern hemisphere when the sun is the lowest that it will be in the sky.  We call it the shortest day of the year, the day that winter starts and the day that we start getting a bit more daylight as the sun starts it rise into the sky.  This winter solstice is even a bit more special this year as we have a full moon happening at the same time.  It is unique when we think that the next time it will happen like this is in 2094.  So, let’s see if we can enjoy this interesting combination and take a walk outside, look up into the night sky, appreciate the beauty and the special moment that we are able to experience.  Nature and the world around us give us so much that we need to appreciate it and feel good about what we have. So, let’s wave at the moon and know that tomorrow we start to get a bit more sunshine back in our day.  Yes, indeed!

The Farm Bill....Really?

Seems a bit odd to be talking about a “farm bill” on the THPL journey.  So why we are interested in a piece of legislation.  Normally we don’t’ need to worry about such things but in this instance,  there is a part of the farm bill that does affect how our journey plays out.  As it turns out a key provision in the bill is the legalization of industrial hemp production.  This seemingly innocuous, run of the mill plant, has some amazing healing properties.  The flowers and leaves of industrial hemp have a compound called CBD in it that is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help us work through some of the normal challenges we face on our journey like chronic pain, stress, sleep issues and so much more.  And so, with the passing of the bill CBD can now move into the mainstream and provide us with a natural alternative to the pills and medicine that many of us take to keep going.  So, here’s to the government doing something (natural) for our day to day performance – maybe they are not so bad after all….

Go caroling

The holiday season brings with it lots of great feelings and experiences.  It also reinforces traditions that are integral to this time of year.  The traditions are how we bring to life the essence of the season.  We can see them, be part of them, admire them.  Some of them are very unique to this time of year and we should partake in some way.  Caroling, singing holiday songs, is one of the great holiday traditions. It is fun to do, it is appreciated by all who listen to them and it shows that we can do things differently.  So, let’s start some holiday caroling and put smiles on the faces of those around and us as well.  It is fun indeed.

do it with soul...

We can make as much as want of this journey that we want to.  There are no rules, no permission required, no measurements that we are beholden to.  It is all us and it is indeed that simple.  So, when we do decide to go for it, to live our lives, to step into the opportunity that is ours for the taking, let’s do it with soul.  Let’s put something into it that makes us proud, impressed and surprised by how much we have in ourselves.  It is there for the taking let’s go get it.  Let’s do it with soul, there is no other way!

if you don't ask...

We go along on our journey and at some point, we realize that we have learned a lot, we know a lot, we use a lot of what we know to make progress, to find our way forward.  And maybe there is a moment along the way that we hit an issue, a “speed bump”, a challenge – something that we don’t know or have a need to understand or it just is not going right.  All too often we stop there, we can blame nerves, the risk of embarrassment – whatever we want to call it.  Bottom line is that when we don’t ask we know for sure that the answer will be no.  So, let’s not leave anything that we intend to do (or know) with a “no”, unless that is the answer we want.  Time to ask….yes that is for sure.

The blog that wasn't

THPL has been on quite some journey, more than six years, blogging every day and loving it, well most of the time. There are days that writing is as hard as anything one can do. Pushups are easier…..LOL And yet there is nothing more satisfying than writing on a daily basis, it gives a sense of purpose to the day, it forces one to think, it allows for creativity and there is learning with every post. Which leads to this post - maybe it will go on out on an email blast - maybe not. The combination of my blog platform and my email system are not too happy with each other. Many hours have been spent trying to figure out what is wrong. Nothing was changed from one day to the next and it just stopped working. Not that this is the first time this has happened with technology but for sure it is frustrating when you cannot figure out what is wrong and getting it to work again. So, for now, the blog will be here - and soon - we hope it will be back in email boxes (for those who read it this matters more). In the meantime please send some smoke signals to the tech gods and ask them to send good vibes and maybe even a solution. Here’s to getting it to work again and the next six years of writing….

655 times

This past weekend Camille Herron set a record for the longest distance run in 24 hours around a track, that was 655 times around a quarter mile track.  The distance clocked out at 162.9 miles.  An amazing athletic feat and an unbelievable mental effort.  There are so many incredible elements of what Camille was able to achieve, and it is nothing sort of remarkable that she was able to run these distances at speeds that approximate fast times for regular runners.  It is inspiring as much as it is confounding – how can someone do this – what is it that Camille did to make this result happen. Training yes, for sure, fitness of course, mindset the difference maker.  Camille held it together longer than we all could imagine, at any speed, around a track.  And from this amazing result the opportunity to be inspired to do something big, in our lives, that pushes us to dig deep, to push beyond, to be great for a moment.

Get ready for the cookies

What could be more fun and enjoyable while on our journey than some homemade holiday cookies, baked goods, special foods, and drinks.  It is that time of year when there are more good things around than any time and it is fun and enjoyable to partake and make it a key part of the holiday season.  And just so we can enjoy with a bit less “guilt” than we might feel let’s think about how we can increase our activity level at the same time.  We can add some bodyweight exercises, more stretching, some winter hikes, a run, just about anything that gets the heart rate up and the body moving.  We can invite others to participate or we can do it on our own.  All that matters is that we think about being active and engaged and combining the “cookies” with some activity.  In this way, we make the holiday season that much better.  Here’s to a cookie and a walk and all else that we can do.

National Hot Cocoa Day

National Hot Cocoa Day, what a fun idea. It does seem that on a cold day on our journey that a hot cocoa would be great.  And it gives us pause that we can think about a day as being any kind of day that we want to make it into.  If we can make a day dedicated to hot cocoa, then we can dedicate a day to whatever we want.  Which allows us to let our imagination wander. What should tomorrow be?  National Kale Day?  And the day after that – how about National Book Day and then National Walking Day and so on.  We can dedicate days to that which we want to focus on, we can share them as we see fit, and we can turn ordinary days into special ones just by the designation that we give them.  So, let’s get it going and make some days into “national” holidays – what better can we do on our journey.

Where to go in 2019

We only have 18 days remaining in 2018.  Wow, what a year it has been.  So many good things that we got done, so many amazing places that we visited and yet so much more to do in 2019. We know that while there is some structure to what we do there is also an opportunity to be more dynamic and spontaneous.  As we approach 2019 we have the opportunity to plan out some of where we want to go in the new year.  Do we want to go near or far?  With others or by ourselves?  To places that we have been before or never have visited.  So many options, so much fun to look forward to.  Let’s start the process now and be ready for 2019 when it arrives.  It will be here before we know it.

Spirit of Exploration

We know innately that the way that we live on our journey has many elements of exploration embedded into it.  While our exploration is put into the context of what it is we look for outside and around us.  It all starts, from inside us – it feels like courage and curiosity, that burning need to see, to explore, to find out.  We need to feed it, to follow it, to embrace it.  We feel better when we allow it to guide us and how we traverse our journey.  It is not enough to just go to the same place over and over.  Exploration is about the unknown, the unfamiliar and learning about it.  Let’s feed this spirit alive inside ourselves, let’s tap into it, and embrace it and turn this THPL journey into a vibrant and rewarding life for us and those around us.  We are explorers after all.

Peace in our Heart

When we choose to live the THPL life, to go on this journey, we do so knowing that there will be struggles and challenges and they will impact us in ways unknown.  And in some way, this can be compounded by events not of our control, events that in some way bring tragedy closer to us, when we feel the pain of some kind of loss, personal or related.  It is from this place that we should look deeply into our heart and think about all that we have, to embrace in a real way our blessings and look beyond the here and now to give ourselves hope and optimism for what life is about.  We know not what is around the corner but what we do know is that how we think about life will affect our lives, and our journey and the lives of all whom we have contact with….. and when we have peace in our heart it is indeed a better world by definition.

Loving life when I have peace in my heart.

Always time

We know that time is the one commodity that is finite.  We have just 168 hours in a week and depending on how many goals we have, how many commitments, it might seem that there is just not enough time.  Then we hit the holiday season and it seems to be even harder to manage our time.  Yet if we think about it and we force ourselves to build a tight schedule we then can find time to do the things that we want to.  And when it gets tight, when the things we want to do count up to more hours than we have then we need to step back and prioritize what it is that we must get done, what we need to get done and then what we want to get done.  What we put in to each category is up to us but to the degree that we do this objectively then the more we will get done and the more satisfied all will be.  Here’s to using our time well – it is all we have

Loving life when I use time well

Work hard, play hard

It would not be the first time that we hear such words – work hard, play hard.  It is good advice – a reminder that to get the most from our time on our journey we have to put a lot into it.  With three weeks remaining in the year and the holiday season upon us this is the time when we have to keep it all going.  No need to give up all of the progress we have made to this point.  So, let’s keep working and playing hard and be ready for 2019 to give it our best.  It is a good feeling when we do that

Loving life when I work hard and play hard

A different place

There are some places that we get to go on our THPL journey that seem to be similar to where we spend a lot of our time and then there are some that just feel different.  It could be the terrain, it could be the climate, the people.  Different in this case is the goal.  We learn more when we see things that are not like ours.  We see different ways of living and dealing with challenges.  It is and should be a moving experience and one that we seek out.  As we think about where to go and what to do in 2019 we should consider looking for a different place to visit.  Take four minutes, watch this video - https://vimeo.com/ab/manaslu - it is a good example of how different it can feel. The Himalaya are some of the most beautiful places in the world and the people who live there are very special.  It might just inspire a stop on our journey.  Enjoy the journey, it is after all, that we have…..

Loving life when I go to different places

I am going on a …..

The journey, there is some part of it that is what we do and there is some part of it where we go.  And while the what we do might be rather consistent week after week, the where we go can vary considerably.  And in that we get the opportunity to be creative, to dream, to be bold.  It is in this context that we can really engage and be active in our thinking, planning and doing.  We start by saying to ourselves, “I am going on “and then fill it in.  Going on a scavenger hunt, on a visit to the museum, on a trip to Peru, on a weekend trip– the ideas and options are endless.  The process of consideration part of the fun.  The learning from each instance a lasting benefit.  I am going on a …… indeed I am!

The five-minute drill

We start each day of our journey with 24 hours.  Sounds like plenty of time to get a lot done.  So, how about we start thinking about some things that we want to do with our time but heretofore we have not had the time to do it.  What if we decide what it is we want to do – read a book, exercise, spend time meditating, the choice is up to us.  Once we figure out what we want then let’s just commit to five minutes to do it.  A very easy goal to achieve, admittedly, but also a way to start with success. Success that we can build on.  We go from one time at five minutes to more minutes per day to more and more days and before we know it we have established a new habit in an area that we wanted to get it done.  Great progress starts with just five minutes, indeed it does!

Loving life when I am doing my five-minute drill

Moderation….nah

It is not uncommon, while on our journey that someone will tell us, in response to how we are going at our goals “everything in moderation”.   It is something that is worthy of consideration.  Should we indeed do things in moderation?  What is the rationale for doing less, or doing the “average”?  Seems that it is just not connected to becoming better at something or doing what we love.  Doing more is better in so many instances and it really is a choice for us to make.  Moderation is an option but if we want to be the best we can we cannot stop at moderation, rather we need to go to a level where more is better.  More is better, yes, that is it!  Here’s to having fun with no ceiling or limits to what we want to do.  Yea baby!

Loving life when I am doing more

Good with who we are

This journey that we are on provides us with the opportunity to bring out the best in who we are.  It gives us the structure, the motivation, the community and so much more.  We step into being big…. bigger than we would otherwise be.  This is how it should be.  And yet there are some, maybe even ourselves, who look amazing from the outside, and yet struggle on the inside.  We know not exactly why this apparent contradiction happens, but we have to respect it and work with it not against it.  Our goal is to be good with who we are and let it inform how we live not how we feel or how we perform.  We can rise above, all we have to do is embrace and flow with it.  The good in us rises to the top and it is why we will always do great on our THPL journey.
