Fat Tuesday

Life, Learning, Fitness, how about a bit of Life and Learning for today.  Having spent some time in New Orleans I can report that the town has “life” – they live large every day but they bring it up another level today.  Yes, today is Mardi Gras, or French for Fat Tuesday.  This is synonymous with revelry before Ash Wednesday which is the first day of Lent.

Mardi Gras celebrations date to Medieval Europe. In New Orleans, Mardi Gras celebrations grew out of Catholicism but also wove in “French celebrations, African music and the masquerade tradition,” In New Orleans, the first written record of Mardi Gras celebrations is from 1699 with gatherings around a campfire. By the 1730s, much of our modern-day traditions had started: People wore masks in processions, beads were given away and celebrating (in style) became central to the parades.  We are all very fortunate that in 1875, Fat Tuesday became an official holiday in Louisiana.

So, on you THPL journey you can think about how to look for opportunities to experience some of the great traditions that are around us (like Fat Tuesday) – you can use these traditions to live and learn at a deeper level and just downright have some fun with all that is around you.  Seems like it is time to get out of our chairs and go experience events like Fat Tuesday – we will be better for having done so.

Loving Life especially on Fat Tuesday

Ciao
